FAQ's
(Frequently Asked Questions)
Career
Counselors help people make and carry out decisions and plans
related to life/career directions. Strategies and techniques of
professional career counselors are tailored to the specific needs of
the person seeking help, and may include
- Conducting
individual and group personal counseling sessions to help
clarify life/career goals.
-
Administering and interpreting tests and inventories to assess
abilities, interests, and other factors, and to identify career
options.
- Encouraging
exploratory activities through assignments and planning
experiences.
- Using
career planning systems and occupational information systems to
help individuals better understand the world of work.
- Providing
opportunities for improving decision-making skills.
- Assisting
in developing individualized career plans.
- Teaching
job hunting strategies and skills and assisting in the
development of resumes.
- Helping to
resolve potential personal conflicts on the job through practice
in human relations skills.
- Assisting
in understanding the integration of work and other life roles.
- Providing
support for persons experiencing job stress, job loss, and
career transition.
Career counseling requires the expertise of a
trained professional. Be wary of services that promise you more
money, quick promotions, or guaranteed resumes. Career issues are
usually complex and require a multifaceted approach by a career
counselor who has extensive education, training, and experience.

Each individual is unique and will be treated as
such. Your counselor will first assess your situation to determine
if career counseling is appropriate for you. Next, you will work
with your counselor to define the specific goals you wish to
achieve. Finally, you will work with your counselor to develop and
implement a plan to reach your goals, and conduct follow up work as
necessary to keep your action plan on track.
Before counseling begins, you will receive a
detailed explanation of Hume & Resources services and fees. A copy
of the ethical guidelines will be provided upon request. (See
below.)
Back to FAQ's
Before career counseling begins, your Hume & Resources
counselor will provide you with a written fee agreement and answer
any questions you have about fees. Generally, the fee structure is
as follows:
Individual Career
Counseling
The first step in working with
Hume & Resources is the initial conversation. In about half an hour,
we will review your history, your career goals, and your purpose in
seeking help. We will also explain the services we offer. The goal
of this initial conversation is to make sure there is a “fit” – that
Hume & Resources offers the services you need. There is no charge
for this initial conversation.
Subsequent sessions are charged
hourly at $50 per hour. Half-hour sessions are available for
document review (such as resumes and cover letters). You will
receive a completed fee agreement before any work begins.
You may terminate services at any time and pay
only for the services rendered.
The Career and Life Balance Group
The fee for this group is $15 per session. Each
session lasts one hour.
You may terminate services at any time and pay
only for the services rendered.
Back to FAQ's
Life happens, and we understand that clients must
occasionally cancel appointments. There is no charge for
cancellation if notice is received at least 24 hours prior to the
appointment. If notice is received fewer than 24 hours before the
scheduled appointment, or if the client does not cancel the
appointment and does not attend (i.e., is a "no show"), one-half of
the appointment fee will be charged.
